Where can you capture the perfect photo of Cambridge without the crowds?
It is no secret that Cambridge is one of the most photogenic cities in the world. With its towering Gothic spires, weeping willows draping over the water, and cobbled medieval lanes, every corner feels like a postcard. But if you have ever tried to take a clean shot of King’s Parade during peak hours, you know that capturing that magic without a sea of selfie sticks can be a challenge.
At We Are Cambridge, our team of student and graduate guides spend their lives walking these courtyards. We know exactly when the light hits the ancient brickwork and where to stand to get the ultimate shot. Here is our insider guide to framing the perfect memories of your trip.

The Riverside Icon: The Mathematical Bridge
Tucked away at the back of Queens’ College, the Mathematical Bridge is an absolute must-have shot. The myth says it was built by Sir Isaac Newton without any nuts or bolts (though it was actually designed by William Etheridge in 1749).
The Best Angle: Don't just take it from the busy Silver Street road bridge. The absolute best way to capture its geometry is looking directly up at it from a low angle while gliding underneath.

The Bird’s-Eye View: Great St Mary’s Tower
For the ultimate panoramic landscape shot that shows the sheer scale of the university, you need to climb. Great St Mary’s, the University Church, sits right in the center of the historic core.
The Best Angle: Climb the 123 narrow spiral steps to the top of the tower. From the viewing platform, you can look straight down onto the roof of the Senate House and get a sweeping view of King's College Chapel.

The Secret Alleyway: Senate House Passage
If you want to capture the moody, dark-academic aesthetic of Cambridge, skip the main streets and slip down Senate House Passage. This high-walled stone lane runs between the Senate House and Caius College.
The Best Angle: Stand at the King’s Parade end of the passage looking down toward Trinity Hall. The towering stone walls create perfect natural leading lines, making it look like you’ve stepped straight into a Harry Potter film.

The Postcard Classic: The College Backs
You cannot write a photography guide without mentioning The Backs—the rolling riverside lawns where the colleges meet the River Cam. This is where you get the grandest, most uninterrupted views of the architecture.
The Best Angle: The view from the middle of the river looking back at the lawns of King's College or Trinity College. The combination of ancient stone, green grass, weeping willows, and water reflections creates the ultimate composition.
